Marty's Stock Rod Build

29 posts in this topic

Starting this thread for those who may be interested and something a bit different.

Having raced on the oval for quite a few years and gave up a few years back after racing Lightning Rods , Mondeo Rods and stock cars decided I missed the hobby so have decided to build myself a car I have built oval racing cars in the past.

The formula I'm going into is Stock Rods these are a stripped out de-skinned hatch back vehicle running 1400cc Race engines.

For those who don't know what stock rods are it's these

So for that I'll need a vehicle and my choice is a Vauxhall Corsa C it's got to be fully stripped and caged ECT the engine that's show in the pictures below will be removed as it's no good for me at all. I had a few hours on the car tonight and the pics below will show where I'm upto and where I started.

My boy is also getting involved in the build and once he has grown a bit more I'll build him a Junior Rod it's basically the same cage ECT apart from they only run a 1000cc none tuned engine.

I hope you enjoy this log it will take a while to build as there is a lot to do 93c3939d663b9be742c0ef4d6d053417.jpg192b1ccc0398d8cff0be3e2a2c721abe.jpgd76c18ce8b44b62cd6f6cc41d59b0a39.jpg9cf4ea92d28e978bce4ae935b81a4a17.jpg5773f8bca0ea520a5b3a15c94fb7cf74.jpg9508b77861c2043ba1a9362d1fd72a47.jpg

These pictures will give you and idea what the cage is going to be like and the last picture will hopefully be my end goal all be it sign writing/sponsors will be different but will look basically the same.

Its great fun an also more rewarding building your own car.

Some tracks do rent out cars from different formulas to try so if you near a track and fancy a go out there it may be worth an ask or maybe buy a car that's already race proven of what ever formula you fancy doing.

If I had the money as we talking 20k + I would love one of these a national hotrod they are just something else and true works of art running a full space frame

It will resemble one more once I pannel it back up just makes my life easier having all pannels out the way and less likely to get damaged even though they bound to get scrapes racing I'll probably cry at my first paint scuff hahaha

Make sure them hands are clean before you put them in your tank !!!

I always have a good scrub before going anywhere near the tank

Got the engine on the stand today

83262490e3783aa8dce8fd9590ad1483.jpg
a0451543cc7f33941be14316ad4e6507.jpg

And removed the exhaust maunfold and rocker cover to expose camshaft and remove camshaft pully
4b4b6e8ed9cfedd04a4b77b2435a18f0.jpga120f4fdd7abf60da8c91269018e72eb.jpg

Then undo head bolts 2 snapped in the block but machine shop soon sort that then remove cam carrier this exposes the rockers and lifters so remove all them as well
b65c3af5e7d3c11419249ed6baf1f395.jpg

And then pull head off marked pistons so know there origional cylinder
16b21175d2b26b07cc005114870ac068.jpg

Next was sump of to expose con rods and crank result the sump is already baffled

c415d479bb85038f9d4555c9e7718b6c.jpg

75f17f2904db5929481398902e5f111f.jpg

Undo all the conrod bolts and pop pistons out and remove oil pick up pipe
3a59441d43740807cd20ccc62f7d8784.jpg

This left just the crank in place remove the crank caps and you left with this

b3d8fa63bd09b5ac56aaceab5b3d8b5c.jpg

Lift crankshaft out and remove bearings and you are left with a bare block
183c0e104d2ccd544441b8ecb24b1ee5.jpg0ee4169ea4fa60059d763e8a786dbd90.jpg

When removing the oil pick up this is exactly why you should not go shoving loads of sealer anywhere near oil ways or sump ECT!!!4c2e38eecc540f070b7afab51096a578.jpg

That's just asking for oil starvation leading to engine failure !!

Jobs that need doing

Bores checked and honed

Broken studs from block removed

Block face machined

Head face machined

3 angled valve seats machined

Cam carrier re-faced

Crank polished as it has a few marks nothing majot

New rings

New camshaft and adjustable vernier

Solid lifters

New rocker arms

New water pump

New cambelt kit

New high pressure oil pump

Full gasket and seal set

Good clean of all parts and a lick of paint

And we should just about be there ......

Thanks I enjoy it keeps my brain active.

Went racing with my mate today this his car I setup and sorted the engine on for him

ea72f4f3d24f17e2b99885be6fa88923.jpgf99bbf53059cb5cf62f85f42c3527a99.jpg

Notice the lean it's how the suspention is setup to go round an oval all about corner weights and weight transfer hard to try and explain without a massive post.

His is a different formula you can hit others cars in his formula hence the steel round it he hit someone today and the car popped out of gear as he went flat out on throttle and over revved engine he came of the track running a cylinder down. I suspected he had broken a rocker and taking rocker cover of he has so I whipped the head off at the track and he has also done a valve as it bounced the valve when revving and it spat the collets out allowing the valve to drop and be hit by the piston.

The pistons also shows some signs of detonation so that will now being having a full rebuild like my engine so I'll add that to my to do list haha
